Podcast 26: Season 2 - SKYFALL SPECIAL!!!

With the release of the 23rd Bond movie "Skyfall", Ryan and Stevie have a 007 special for your listening pleasure!

We'll breakdown and review Daniel Craig's third outing as the movie world's favourite secret agent.  Given the disappointment surrounding Quantum of Solace, pressure is really on Craig and director Sam Mendes to get it right this time round.  Have a quick look at the trailer to get you in the mood:

After the review, we discuss three questions that are now looming over the famous franchise, including Craig's place in the hierarchy of Bond actors.

Finally, we'll wrap up with possibly the most important top 5 rundown we've ever done on the podcast - the top 5 Bond movies.  This means we're going to have to nail our colours to the mast, as we are going on the record here! Podcast 25: Season 2

This weeks review is Ruby Sparks which stars real life couple Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan. Kazan is also on scripting duties and behind the camera we have the duo of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who previoulsy gave us Little Miss Sunshine, but have been fairly quite since then. In movie news we discuss the potential crossover of two of Ridley Scotts franchises: Prometheus and Blade Runner, we look at The World's End poster (the last part of Pegg and Wrights Cornetto Trilogy) and we get confirmation that Matt Damon is unlikely to return for more Bourne (hardly surprising given our review of the latest instalment).

Finally, we look at the top 5 directing duo's in honour of Dayton and Faris.

Podcast 24: Season 2

After a couple of weeks off we are back with a vengeance, a lot like Brian Mills from Taken 2. We are taking no prisoners as we disect and breakdown the latest releases and give you a round up of what else is out at the cinema at the moment.

In movie news we look at the new Die Hard trailer (below), Del Toro's vision for the new Hulk TV show and some titbits on Arnie's career as he tries to rekindle his career after 8 years as the Governator.

Finally, in our top 5's we discuss the top 5 worst carbon copies - films that follow the exact same premise and storyline as the first, but with none of the charm or wit that makes the originals so great.

Season 2: Podcast 23

This week Stephen and Clarky are reviewing the new sci-fi-brain-melting-time-travel from Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom), starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. It was hard to review this film without giving away too much, but it's fair to say that this is a firm favourite of the podcast so far. Avoid as many reviews as you can and go and see it on the 28th of September.

In movie news we look at the new trailer for Lincoln, the new Ted and Bourne Legacy sequels that have been announced and the lost Kubrick film that is due for a re-release.

Finally, in the top 5's this week we look at the greatest time travel films. It is a strong list and one of the best we have had. We would happily sit down for a day and watch them back to back.

Podcast 22: Season 2

This week Clarky is back in the studio, but unfortunately Stephen is away (hopefully we will be back in full force last week), to reviwe Dredd 3D, even though Clarky only saw it in 2D! Directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) and starring Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Bourne Supremacy) this is a reboot to the 1995 version starring Sly Stallone that was much maligned. Based on the 2000 AD comic book it follows Judge Dredd as he takes a rookie on her first day out in Megacity 1. Click here to listen to our thoughts on the film.

In movie news we look at some snippets that were released this week regarding James Bond and Star Trek, as well as the fact that horror bigwigs Ti West and Eli Roth are teaming up (hopefully it will end better than Ti WEst's sequel to Cabin Fever which he eventually left after filming and tried to have his name removed from!).

Finally, in the top 5's we discuss the top 5 movie Judges. A subject which is not as easy as it sounds resulting in a few left field choices!

Season 2: Podcast 21

Alrighty folks,

Podcast 21 of season 2 sees TMG's Ryan and Stephen from Flix Capacitor back into the studio (minus Clarky) to take a look at the new remake of 90's cult sci-fi hit Total Recall.

Arnie, Sharon Stone and the plastic prosthetic mutants are replaced by Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsdale and a whole lot of CGI. Here's the trailer for your viewing pleasure:

Season 2: Podcast 20

This week Clarky is back following his car troubles from last week and we also have Stephen Carty from flixcapacitor joining us again. It's a bumper issue with all three of us discussing The Bourne Legacy as well as giving our top 5 spies. Can Jeremy Renner take over from Matt Damon and lead the franchise onwards. the original trilogy is one of the best of recent times and reinvigorated the spy genre - a tough act to follow.

As well as this we are also discussing the possibility of a Justice League movie in response to Marvels Avnegers Assemble, but how will Nolan's Batman and Zack Snyders Superman fit into this series? Also released this week is some casting news for Kick Ass 2 and possible casting for The Expendables 3 (even though the 2nd one isn't even out at cinema's yet!).

Hello folks!

We're back for podcast 19 of the second season - and we're on comedy territory this week.

Ryan is joined by Stephen Carty from the most excellent film and TV review blog FlixCapacitor.co.uk to discuss the first full length feature from Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlane "TED", starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Macfarlane himself as the foul-mouthed teddy bear.

In movie news, the guys take a closer look at the new Skyfall trailer and discuss what lies ahead for the Bond franchise.

Finally, in honour of the main character of the featured review, Ryan and Stephen run down the top five animated/animatronic characters in otherwise human casts. Loads to choose from there!

Season 2: Podcast 17: The Dark Knight Rises special

It's finally here. After months of rumour and speculation, which we have wholeheartedly joined in with, the final instalment of Chris Nolan's Batman franchise is finally here with The Dark Knight Rises. This should be our last word on the matter (although we may give an updated review after we have had an IMAX viewing....) and as such we have gone all out with an hour long special where we give you a spoiler free review, before breaking the film down and discussing it in minute detail! Therefore, if you've not seen the film yet we would suggest that you only listen up to 15 minutes 52 seconds and at which point hit pause until you've treated yourself to a cinema trip.

If you've been to see it, then you will know there is a lot to discuss and we break these areas down and discuss them in the remainder of the podcast. Please don't be afraid to contact us and let us know what you think and whether or not you agree with our analysis!

Finally, our top 5 this week could only be on one subject - the top 5 moments from Chris Nolan's trilogy. Below are a few tasters as to what to expect from the first two films before you click here to enjoy the last of all the Batman-y goodness we have to offer!

Season 2, podcast 16

As the Edinburgh International Film Festival drew to a close last night we thought it would be worthwhile to look at some of the films that graced our screens over the past two weeks, and we start with the opening film which is in cinemas now - Killer Joe.

When a debt puts a young man's (Emile Hirsch) life in danger, he turns to Joe (Matthew McConaughey) to take out his evil mother in order to collect the insurance. However, he doesn't have the money up front and has to offer his 12 year old sister as a deposit. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection) and based on Tracey Lett's play this is a very dark film noir.

Next up is the horror anthology V/H/S which contains five different found footage films with another wrap around segment. Each film is directed by an up and coming horror director and you shouldn't let the found footage put you off as the anthology allows some fresh life to be breathed into this tired format.

Along the horror lines we also review the British film Berberian Sound Studio. Set in the 1970's it follows Gilderoy (Toby Jones), a sound engineer from rural England who has moved to Italy to work on a Giallo style horror film (in the vein of Suspiria and Balck Sunday). It's an interesting premise but lacks a bit in execution in the final third, and is almost certainly not for those who have not got an interest in cinema / Italian Giallo.

Second from last we caught God Bless America, a very, very black comedy from Bobcat Goldthwait, which looks at our obsession with celebrity culture and our relationship with TV and the media. Not for everyone but if you have a dark sense of humour it may be for you. If we were to compare it to anything it's like an even more over the top version of Falling Down, or the Black Mirror series which was recently on TV.

Finally, one of the best films we saw at the festival this year was Shadow Dancer. The first fictional film from James Marsh (the director behind the excellent documentaries Man on Wire and Project Nim) it focuses on the relationship between an IRA terrorist (Andrea Risebourgh - Brighton Rock) and her MI5 handler (Clive Owen) after she has been turned. It is very low key, but the performances are excellent and it is incredibly tense at time. It asks a lot of the audience and you have to pay attention but it is ultimately a very rewarding experience.

Podcast 45 (Podcast 15 of Season 2)

Forgive the boring looking poster above, The Five-Year Engagement is a rare beast - a genuinely funny rom-com, that also has some heart. Written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller (Stoller also directs), the same team behind Forgetting Sarah Marshall, are back with another rom-com. Again this is produced by Judd Apatow, and therefore is probably going to be compared to Bridesmaids, but thankfully the comparison is reasonable.

In movie news we discuss the new trailer for Taken 2 (below), the news that Charlie Sheen has bagged a role in Machete Kills and the news that Christopher Nolan's partner, in marriage and producing, has announced that he will not be returning to the Batman universe and that The Dark Knight Rises will be the conclusion.

Podcast 14

This week Ryan and Clarky are reviewing Rodrigo Cortes' new film Red Lights. Like his previous effort Buried, this has a B movie feel to it and it looks at the world of psychics, the paranormal and those charged to investigate it - University Professors played by Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver. Robert De Niro also stars as Simon Silver, the worlds biggest psychic. Just like Limitless the big man phones it in, and is nowhere near as interesting to watch as he was in his younger days.

In movie news this week we review the Django Unchained trailer, the new film from QT, and discuss the fact that Jonah Hill has now joined the cast. See the trailer below. We also look at another Jonah Hill film, The Wolf of Wall Street which has also added a new member to its cast in the form of the awesome Jean Dujardin (last seen in the exceptional The Artist). Finally, we have a look at some Prometheus news, which adds further to our disappointment. A recent video from Red Letter Media (who also tear apart the Star Wars prequels) recently hit the nail on the head and is shown below. Watch out though, it is spoilerific.

Finally, in honour of Red Lights we discuss the top 5 movie psychics. There are a few left field choices and plenty of banterful debate. Click hear to check out all our offerings.

Season 2, Podcast 13

Incredibly this is one of the best posters I can find for Prometheus on the internet, which is surprising for a film that looks so great in the trailer. It does sum up the film for me, in the sense that it got right up my noise and was very disappointing. Podcast 42

We're back after a two week break and this week we are reviewing Wes Anderson's latest film Moonrise Kingdom, which recently opened the Cannes film festival which has being going on for the last couple of weeks - more on that later. Moonrise Kingdom focuses on a love story between two misguided twelve year old outsiders who decide to run away together. Featuring a, typically, eclectic cast which includes the likes of Anderson regulars Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, as well as Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton and Edward Norton. If you know Wes Anderson then you should know what to expect, but below is a trailer for you to check out in the meantime.

In movie news we review the new trailer for Skyfall the latest James Bond from director Sam Mendes. The trailer looks almost as glorious and beautiful as the new Bond girl Berenice Marlohe! A trailer (of the film not Berenice) is below for your delectation. We also discuss the results of the Cannes film festival.

Finally, in honour of Wes Anderson, and his particular and peculiar stylings, this weeks top 5 is the top 5 things that make a Wes Anderson movie. Podcast 41

This week we are reviewing American Pie: Reunion. The 4th cinema release, ignoring the countless straight to DVD cash ins that have been thrust upon us in the interim, follows all the original gang who are back for their 13 year reunion (they forgot to cash in 3 years ago, or weren't desperate enough until now). In movie news we discuss the news that Jonah Hill has lined up another acting (rather than a straight out comedy role) role following his Oscar nomination for Moneyball. This time he is lined up for The Wolf of Wall Street opposite Leo DiCaprio in Scorsese's new film which is based on the memoirs of a Wall Street stockbroker.

We also discuss Josh Brolin's involvement in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake and the fact that The Avengers has officially had the largest opening weekend in history!

Finally, in honour of the American Pie series (and Stifler), we discuss the top 5 gross out movie moments of all time. We've included some of the shortlist below so you can remind yourself of what's in store before you listen to the podcast (some of them are just clips from the film, or even reactions, as the scenes in question are maybe not necessarily suitable viewing for everyone!).

Podcast 40

It's finally here, the first major blockbuster of the year (and the first comic book movie, before The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman arrive later this year). The long awaited Avengers Assemble has finally arrived for us to review. Following on from Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America, and some shorts starring Agent Coulson, the team is being called to arms to save the world! If you need a refresher to what has come before and the crossover between the films then check out this incredibly geeky (ie awesome) timeline of what has come before. (please noted that Avengers Assemble is included in this timeline so don't scrawl to far to the right if you've not seen the film yet!)

As noted above, and in our previous podcasts, The Dark Knight Rises is due to come out this year and is officially our most anticipated movie ever! The viral campaign kicked off yesterday with fans sent out to collect photos of grafitti supporting the criminal The Batman. Every photo unlocked a still from the trailer and within a few hours the entire trailer was available to view (see below). This may be the last trailer, but we're sure this won't be the last viral campaign we see given how succesful it was for The Dark Knight, and with the advent of Twitter and other social networking sites it is likely that Warner Brothers will make the most of them to hype up the awaiting fans.

Given the comic book themes gone before and the numerous top 5 super heroes that we have done before we opted for a different top 5 feature this week, but one that still relates to this weeks movie - the top 5 movie gangs / ensembles. To enjoy this and everything else noted above click here.

Podcast 39

This week we review the new documentary from Kevin Macdonald. Following on from his Oscar winning One Day in September and the spectacular Touching the Void our hopes were high*, but would it live up to our expectations, especially following some of the superb documentaries we have seen recently (Senna, Project Nim, Into the Abyss, Staff Benda Bilili, Anvil, Dig!).

In movie news we look at the tidbits that have come out regarding Anchorman 2 and the potential storyline, Russell Crowe's titular role in the upcoming film from Darren Aranofsky - Noah - and the fact that big Mel Gibson (despite all his issues) may be returning to our screens in the Mexploitation sequel - Machete Kills. Quite how he will cope hanging out with anyone who isn't white is anyone's guess. At least the majority of Mexicans are Roman Catholic which, as we all know, is a subject close to the wee man's heart!

Finally, in this weeks top 5 we discuss the top 5 movie musicians. These can be real life (see the aforementioned Dig! and Anvil), biopics (Ray, Walk the Line) or completely fictional (Spinal Tap, Scott Pilgrim). Who will make it to the top of the pops? Click here to find out.

Season 2: Podcast 8

This week we're reviewing the new horror / comedy (two very difficult genres to mash up) The Cabin in the Woods. Written by Joss Whedon (Buffy, Avengers) and Drew Goddard (Buffy, Cloverfield), who also directs, which sounds like a winner. It's been garnering some cracking reviews, but did Ryan and I think it was up to it? Click here to find out.

In movie news this week we discuss the news that Iron Man 3 is going to be filming on location in China, the possibility of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn reuiniting and the Django Unchained, for which the poster below was released this week:

Following on from the cliche ridden The Cabin in the Woods this week our top 5 has a slight twist to it as we look at the top 5 horror cliches, and provide films to support this answer! In the end it turned into a list of rules of what to do and what not to do if you want to make it through a horror film.....

Season 2: Podcast 7

This week we review the Norwegian thriller / black comedy - Headhunters. An adaptation of Jo Nesbo's book this stars a cast of relative unknowns to UK audiences, although it does inlcude Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who appears in Game of Thrones. Julie Olgaard, the original Nanna Birk Larsen in the original The Killing (or Forbrydelsen if you like), also stars in a supporting role. The trailer is below (note the lack of speaking to try and trick those of you who are afraid of subtitles!):

In movie news we discuss Looper, the new film from Ryan Johnson and Joseph-Gordon Levitt (re-teaming again after Brick and The Brothers Bloom). This sci-fi has the crazy premise of JGL being sent to the future to terminate his future self (Bruce Willis - he must have had a tough paper route!). The full trailer isn't up yet but the first teaser trailer is below.

We also discuss the news that The Dark Knight Rises has a rating (PG-13 in the US) and the fact that with Marvel Avengers Assemble / Avengers / Avengers Assemble (whatever it is called now) is about to hit the screens at the end of the month, Captain America 2 now has a release date!

Finally, after this weeks review of Headhunters, which focuses on a burglar of fine art, we look at the top 5 movie heists. Season 2: Podcast 6

Hello there. How are you?

Unfortunately we have just realised that our sharing site for the podcast now requires you to sign in. Not to worry though, signing up is free as is downloading the podcast thereafter. We are in the process of setting up a fancy new website so please bear with us, but for the moment you can access this weeks podcast here.

This week we review Wrath of the Titans, which is quite possibly already marked in as our worst film of the year. Yes, we know that this is a big claim, but it really is that bad. Stay away from the cinema altogether in our opinion, but if you do go. Save yourself £15 per person and don't see it in 3D IMAX. It's so bad that we won't even put the link to the trailer on the blog as it would hurt your eyes and be 2 minutes you will never get back. No need to thank us, we just want the best for you.

In movie news we discuss the fact that two of our favourite ever comedies, Anchorman and Dumb & Dumber, are getting sequels. Is this cause for celebration, or concern. If the way that Will Ferrell broke the news about the sequel is anything to go by, the gods are looking favourably upon this one...

In semi movie news* we also discuss the new TV show from Aaron Sorkin - The Newsroom. We think it looks great, but check out the trailer below for yourself and let us know what you think.
