It's that time of year again where the guys run down the best and worst of the past 12 months.
Yes - it's the return of The Guysies! The lads will devote the entire podcast to top 5s looking back at 2012 in film. And of course, Ryan has looked out his favourite showdown tunes from some 80s classics to soundtrack the awards after they went down so well last time round.
We have the following 7 categories:
BEST FILM
BEST DIRECTOR
BEST ACTOR
BEST ACTRESS
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR / ACTRESS
GUILTY PLEASURE
WORST FILM OF THE YEAR / BIGGEST STINKER / BIGGEST TURKEY
So plenty for Ryan, Clarky and Stephen to be getting on with!
Hello and welcome to the penultimate podcast of 2012!
The final full review of the year is one of its most anticipated films - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It sees Peter Jackson return to Middle Earth following the huge success of his Lord of the Rings trilogy with another adaptation of one of JRR Tolkien's most loved books. Does he still have the magic, or is it a quest too far?
In anticipation of this year's award show on the 29th of December, the guys run down the various categories they'll be voting on in the 2012 "Guysies". They'll also look back at last year's winners to see if their choices still stand up!
Finally, the lads will finish with a top 5 that looks ahead to next year as they rundown their most anticipated films of 2013. Might as well start the hype machine running now......
Ryan and Stevie are at the controls this week, as Clarky recovers from his 30th birthday celebrations (a screeing of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade at Edinburgh's most excellent Dominion Cinema - great night!)
This week's main review is Seven Psychopaths - a fast talking crime comedy from Martin McDonagh of "In Bruges" fame and featuring a powerhouse cast of Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and the legendary Christopher Walken.
The lads also run through some of the movie headlines from the past seven days, including a look at the trailer for one of the many films starring Tom Cruise slated for release in 2013 - Oblivion. Take a look and give us your thoughts.
As always, they finish with the top 5s - this week, specially extended to fit in with the main review, Ryan and Stevie runs down the top seven movie psychopaths (see what they did there?!)
We're fast approaching awards season but before Ryan and Clarky start putting together their top 5 lists for the end of season show, they take in the new effort from Ben Wheatley "Sightseers".
The jet black horror comedy follows couple Chris and Tina as they go caravaning in the English countryside and a series of grizzly murders crops up along their route. His last effort "Kill List" was one of the most divisive films we've reviewed on the podcast, so will this spark the same level of debate?
The lads also look at some of the movie news from the past seven days, including lots of casting news and rumours on a couple of major super hero franchises. (Check out this interview with Jason Flemyng that has sparked the latest round of Star Wars rumours)
The top 5s this week is very much in the spirit of our main review, as the lads run down their funniest movie deaths. There have been a lot over the years, so expect some wild and weird nominations - a taster of some of these are showcased below the link to the podcast. Enjoy!
This week we are back to our full compliment with Ryan, Clarky and Stephen all present and correct to review David O. Russell's new film Silver Linings Playbook. Starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence this is a slightly darker than normal rom-com as we track their relationship and how they cope with mental illness and depression.
In movie news we discuss the fact that David Cronenberg was approached for Return of the Jedi (!) and we look at the first pictures of Richard Ayoade's new film The Double which is starring Jesse Eisenberg. Finally, we discuss the possibility of Wayne's World 3 and whether or not this is a good thing.
Last of all, in honour of Bobby De Niro, we review the top 5 movie dads. There were a few glaring omissions by some members but we got there in the end.
Ryan and Clarky are back in the studio to discuss the latest effort from critically acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson "The Master". It follows a WWII vet as he struggles to readjust to civilian life and sees him fall in with the leader of a strange philosphical movement called "The Cause". The A-List cast includes podcast favourite Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. I think it's fair to say expectations are high for this!
The guys also run down some of the week's movie news, including a possible team up involving Robert Downey Junior and Jack Nicholson in "The Judge"- sounds like a potentially epic partnership but will there be enough scenery for the pair of them to chew?!
The final section of the podcast is top fives as usual - this week focuses on the work of our featured director Paul Thomas Anderson, so Ryan and Clarky run down his top five films in their eyes!
We're back up to full strength this week with Ryan, Clarky and Stevie all in the studio to breakdown the latest actor/director double header from Ben Affleck - "Argo".
Based on a true story, Affleck stars as a CIA specialist tasked with getting a group of hostages out of Iran amid the political and social unrest of the early eighties. He's also calling the shots behind the camera, something he pulled off with great aplomb in "The Town" - can he find the right recipe once again?
We'll also give our thoughts on the first trailer of the much-hyped World War Z - as both Clarky and Ryan are both big fans of the book, how will this sit with them? Have a look for yourself.
Finally, to honour the magnificent beard that Ben Affleck sports in "Argo", the lads will run down their top 5 movie beards!!!! A few hairy options are on the cards no doubt.....
We're changing gear this week after our Skyfall special, moving away from the blockbusters and looking at something from the arthouse side of cinema.
Our main review is "Rust and Bone" (or "De Rouille et D'Os" to give it the proper Gallic introduction!), the French relationship drama from Jacques Audiard and starring podcast favourite Marianne Cotillard. Don't let the subtitles put you off!
We also look at the week's movie news including the major announcement on Disney's takeover of Lucasfilm - and the fact we will be seeing more Star Wars movies (the first new one is slated for 2015!).
We round off the week with a slightly tenuous top five. Killer Whales play a major role "Rust and Bone", so Ryan and Stevie run down their top 5 movie fish - a slightly lighter finish to go with the heavier going of the main review!
With the release of the 23rd Bond movie "Skyfall", Ryan and Stevie have a 007 special for your listening pleasure!
We'll breakdown and review Daniel Craig's third outing as the movie world's favourite secret agent. Given the disappointment surrounding Quantum of Solace, pressure is really on Craig and director Sam Mendes to get it right this time round. Have a quick look at the trailer to get you in the mood:
After the review, we discuss three questions that are now looming over the famous franchise, including Craig's place in the hierarchy of Bond actors.
Finally, we'll wrap up with possibly the most important top 5 rundown we've ever done on the podcast - the top 5 Bond movies. This means we're going to have to nail our colours to the mast, as we are going on the record here! Does Skyfall make the final cut or is Sir Sean Connery just too smooth for Daniel Craig? You'll just have to listen to find out!
Podcast 21 of season 2 sees TMG's Ryan and Stephen from Flix Capacitor back into the studio (minus Clarky) to take a look at the new remake of 90's cult sci-fi hit Total Recall.
Arnie, Sharon Stone and the plastic prosthetic mutants are replaced by Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsdale and a whole lot of CGI. Here's the trailer for your viewing pleasure:
And here's the trailer for Paul Verhoeven's original from 1990 - I know which one we prefer!
In movie news, the guys discuss Ryan Gosling's move behind the camera, more Verhoeven remake talk with news on the Robocop update and the controversial alternate scenes in the DVD release of Avengers Assemble. Have a look at the alternative opening to the movie and tell us if you think it should have been used instead:
Finally to finish off, Ryan and Steven pay homage to the original (and best) Total Recall by running down their top five memory loss films.
We're back for podcast 19 of the second season - and we're on comedy territory this week.
Ryan is joined by Stephen Carty from the most excellent film and TV review blog FlixCapacitor.co.uk to discuss the first full length feature from Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlane "TED", starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Macfarlane himself as the foul-mouthed teddy bear.
In movie news, the guys take a closer look at the new Skyfall trailer and discuss what lies ahead for the Bond franchise.
Finally, in honour of the main character of the featured review, Ryan and Stephen run down the top five animated/animatronic characters in otherwise human casts. Loads to choose from there!
This week we are reviewing American Pie: Reunion. The 4th cinema release, ignoring the countless straight to DVD cash ins that have been thrust upon us in the interim, follows all the original gang who are back for their 13 year reunion (they forgot to cash in 3 years ago, or weren't desperate enough until now). Have they grown up or are they still the same guys we knew 13 years ago, click here to find out our thoughts.
In movie news we discuss the news that Jonah Hill has lined up another acting (rather than a straight out comedy role) role following his Oscar nomination for Moneyball. This time he is lined up for The Wolf of Wall Street opposite Leo DiCaprio in Scorsese's new film which is based on the memoirs of a Wall Street stockbroker.
We also discuss Josh Brolin's involvement in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake and the fact that The Avengers has officially had the largest opening weekend in history!
Finally, in honour of the American Pie series (and Stifler), we discuss the top 5 gross out movie moments of all time. We've included some of the shortlist below so you can remind yourself of what's in store before you listen to the podcast (some of them are just clips from the film, or even reactions, as the scenes in question are maybe not necessarily suitable viewing for everyone!).
It's finally here, the first major blockbuster of the year (and the first comic book movie, before The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman arrive later this year). The long awaited Avengers Assemble has finally arrived for us to review. Following on from Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America, and some shorts starring Agent Coulson, the team is being called to arms to save the world! If you need a refresher to what has come before and the crossover between the films then check out this incredibly geeky (ie awesome) timeline of what has come before. (please noted that Avengers Assemble is included in this timeline so don't scrawl to far to the right if you've not seen the film yet!)
As noted above, and in our previous podcasts, The Dark Knight Rises is due to come out this year and is officially our most anticipated movie ever! The viral campaign kicked off yesterday with fans sent out to collect photos of grafitti supporting the criminal The Batman. Every photo unlocked a still from the trailer and within a few hours the entire trailer was available to view (see below). This may be the last trailer, but we're sure this won't be the last viral campaign we see given how succesful it was for The Dark Knight, and with the advent of Twitter and other social networking sites it is likely that Warner Brothers will make the most of them to hype up the awaiting fans.
Given the comic book themes gone before and the numerous top 5 super heroes that we have done before we opted for a different top 5 feature this week, but one that still relates to this weeks movie - the top 5 movie gangs / ensembles. To enjoy this and everything else noted above click here.
This week we review the new documentary from Kevin Macdonald. Following on from his Oscar winning One Day in September and the spectacular Touching the Void our hopes were high*, but would it live up to our expectations, especially following some of the superb documentaries we have seen recently (Senna, Project Nim, Into the Abyss, Staff Benda Bilili, Anvil, Dig!).
In movie news we look at the tidbits that have come out regarding Anchorman 2 and the potential storyline, Russell Crowe's titular role in the upcoming film from Darren Aranofsky - Noah - and the fact that big Mel Gibson (despite all his issues) may be returning to our screens in the Mexploitation sequel - Machete Kills. Quite how he will cope hanging out with anyone who isn't white is anyone's guess. At least the majority of Mexicans are Roman Catholic which, as we all know, is a subject close to the wee man's heart!
Finally, in this weeks top 5 we discuss the top 5 movie musicians. These can be real life (see the aforementioned Dig! and Anvil), biopics (Ray, Walk the Line) or completely fictional (Spinal Tap, Scott Pilgrim). Who will make it to the top of the pops? Click here to find out.
This week we're reviewing the new horror / comedy (two very difficult genres to mash up) The Cabin in the Woods. Written by Joss Whedon (Buffy, Avengers) and Drew Goddard (Buffy, Cloverfield), who also directs, which sounds like a winner. It's been garnering some cracking reviews, but did Ryan and I think it was up to it? Click here to find out.
In movie news this week we discuss the news that Iron Man 3 is going to be filming on location in China, the possibility of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn reuiniting and the Django Unchained, for which the poster below was released this week:
Following on from the cliche ridden The Cabin in the Woods this week our top 5 has a slight twist to it as we look at the top 5 horror cliches, and provide films to support this answer! In the end it turned into a list of rules of what to do and what not to do if you want to make it through a horror film.....
This week we review the Norwegian thriller / black comedy - Headhunters. An adaptation of Jo Nesbo's book this stars a cast of relative unknowns to UK audiences, although it does inlcude Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who appears in Game of Thrones. Julie Olgaard, the original Nanna Birk Larsen in the original The Killing (or Forbrydelsen if you like), also stars in a supporting role. The trailer is below (note the lack of speaking to try and trick those of you who are afraid of subtitles!):
In movie news we discuss Looper, the new film from Ryan Johnson and Joseph-Gordon Levitt (re-teaming again after Brick and The Brothers Bloom). This sci-fi has the crazy premise of JGL being sent to the future to terminate his future self (Bruce Willis - he must have had a tough paper route!). The full trailer isn't up yet but the first teaser trailer is below.
We also discuss the news that The Dark Knight Rises has a rating (PG-13 in the US) and the fact that with Marvel Avengers Assemble / Avengers / Avengers Assemble (whatever it is called now) is about to hit the screens at the end of the month, Captain America 2 now has a release date!
Finally, after this weeks review of Headhunters, which focuses on a burglar of fine art, we look at the top 5 movie heists. There was a lot to choose from here and some tough decisions were made, but do you agree with our final list? Click here to find out what it is and for everything else listed above.
Unfortunately we have just realised that our sharing site for the podcast now requires you to sign in. Not to worry though, signing up is free as is downloading the podcast thereafter. We are in the process of setting up a fancy new website so please bear with us, but for the moment you can access this weeks podcast here.
This week we review Wrath of the Titans, which is quite possibly already marked in as our worst film of the year. Yes, we know that this is a big claim, but it really is that bad. Stay away from the cinema altogether in our opinion, but if you do go. Save yourself £15 per person and don't see it in 3D IMAX. It's so bad that we won't even put the link to the trailer on the blog as it would hurt your eyes and be 2 minutes you will never get back. No need to thank us, we just want the best for you.
In movie news we discuss the fact that two of our favourite ever comedies, Anchorman and Dumb & Dumber, are getting sequels. Is this cause for celebration, or concern. If the way that Will Ferrell broke the news about the sequel is anything to go by, the gods are looking favourably upon this one...
In semi movie news* we also discuss the new TV show from Aaron Sorkin - The Newsroom. We think it looks great, but check out the trailer below for yourself and let us know what you think.
* Aaron Sorkin writes (The Social Network & Moneyball), it stars Jeff Daniels (Dumb & Dumber) and Emily Mortimer (Hugo), and the pilot is directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad and Adventureland).
Finally, we discuss the top 5 movie gods (not as easy as it sounds!).
Ryan and Clarky had special guests from the Edinburgh Horror Club joining them this week to discuss the first horror screening of the new season- the low budget, found footage, exorcism extravaganza that is The Devil Inside. Critically destroyed by some reviewers and booed by American audiences it has still raked in over $50 million, not a bad return for it's $1 million budget. Does it deserve it's bad rap, or is it a genuine horror break out that is being unjustly vilified, click here to find out our views. (Be warned the four of us were around 2 mics this week which has resulted in the levels being slightly off, sorry. So if the volume suddenly ramps up, don't worry too much!).
In movie news this week we discuss the online viral campaign for The Dark Knight Rises that is starting to gear up again (totally dismissing our previous claims to not get caught up in the hype!). We revisit last weeks podcast and discuss the fact that John Carter looks set to be the biggest flop of all time, somewhat unjustly in our mind. Finally, we discuss the new trailer for Prometheus, which you can view below.
Finally, in keeping with our review this week, @EdHorrorClub debate the top 5 religious horrors of all time. Will Clarky bring a leftfield choice to the table to try and provoke a reaction - almost certainly!
Clarky may be away on his holidays, but Ally from Edinburgh Horror Club has stepped up to the plate to take his place.
Our main review this week is Rampart, the cop corruption drama set in 90s LA starring Woody Harrelllson.
We also have a look at the big winners from last night's Oscars in the movie news section - sadly Clarky's predictions beat mine.....
Finally, in keeping with the dodgy policing on show in our main review, Ally and I run down our top 5 movie bad cops - and if you don't agree we'll be after you with the nightsticks and sirens!
You can listen to the podcast here - and remember you can get involved with the show via e-mail, twitter and the comments section below.
After a week off (apologies, that wasn't planned!) we're back with the second podcast of the new season.
Today's main review focuses on Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which is in the running for the Best Picture Oscar in a few weeks time. It's the last of the main contenders Ryan and Clarky had to see, so expectations were high!
We also discuss some of the movie news from the past seven days, including news of Kick Ass 2 going into production later this year.
Finally, we round it off by running down the top 5 films of a true Hollywood A-lister, Mr Tom Hanks. Legend.
